About Casting for Recovery
The mission of Casting for Recovery (CfR) is to empower women in treatment or recovery from breast cancer through oncology-informed retreats. These retreats connect women to each other and to nature using the therapeutic sport of fly fishing—and are offered at no cost to participants.
Highlights
- Founded in 1996 by 2 women: a breast surgeon and a professional fly fishing guide
- 2.5-day retreats are provided at no cost, ensuring women from all walks of life have an equal opportunity to benefit from our healing program
- The casting motion of fly fishing mirrors the gentle exercises recommended after breast cancer surgery or radiation—helping to stretch scar tissue and improve mobility in the arm and shoulder
- Compassionate support from oncology medical and psychosocial professionals at every retreat
- 65-70% of women who attend a CfR retreat have never been to a breast cancer support group. This tells us that CfR is reaching a segment of the population not drawn to traditional resources, but who are in need of support
Critical Funding Needs
$1,500 – Provides a life-changing retreat experience for one woman, including meals, lodging, equipment, and supplies.
$5,000 – Supports outreach and resources tailored to the real-life needs of Young Women who are balancing cancer with careers and parenting; Women of Color, especially Black women, who are more likely to die from breast cancer than any other racial group; and Underserved Women who experience poorer outcomes due to delayed screenings and reduced access to high-quality care.
$10,000 – Supports nationwide outreach, vetting and training of local oncology medical and psychosocial volunteers who serve at 60 retreats nationwide.
$20,000 – Provides crucial support to expand the number of stage IV retreats and serve more women facing limited time and fewer support and resource options.
